History and Overview
When Debbie and Carlos Rosas began creating Nia in the early 1980's, they envisioned a workout program without shoes, and without repetitive jumping up and down movements. They added vocal sounds and emotional expression. They motivated teachers and students to embrace love, pleasure and freedom when they exercised. They incorporated the concept of "play". Thus, Nia would change the way the world went about getting fit and finding wellness in body, mind, spirit and emotions.
Today, Nia has approximately 2,000 licensed teachers in more than 27 countries worldwide - a testament to the power and versatility of this unique practice. For further information about Nia, please go to
